Kapiti Island, New Zealand

Sunday, 12 August 2007

We're heading for the most unpronouncable place so far - Paraparaumu - not matter how we pronounce it, it's wrong! We're heading for the only campsite ready for our boat trip the next day. Amusingly we thought we'd seen everything when it came to campsites, clearly not. We're "greeted" by a guy who to be perfectly honest looks like he hasn't a clue why we're there! We quickly discover why. The campsite is basically a small village of people that have sold their houses and now live in mobile homes - one caravan actually has a small white picket fence!!! After informing us that the facilities are locked at 9 (it's 9.30) we head back out to find some food!

The alarm beeps at 7am for me to ring ahead and check there's no problems. Bad news, the boat's been cancelled due to bad weather. Hmm, what on earth are we going to do now then? There's a local farmer's market, that should keep us occupied. For about 20mins! After a heavy downpour we take refuge in their local "mall". A coffee later and we're done again. Looks like we're going to have to stay the night ready for tomorrow's boat, however we head back to yet another ridiculous place name - Paekakariki - in the hope of a friendlier host!

7am, beep beep beep - once again our boat is cancelled. Damn the weather. The island is protected and the only way over is by tiny boat. They're unsure if it'll be running tomorrow either so we make the decision to move on and forget about Kapiti.
