Varanasi is alot bigger than I thought it would be. There are lots of Ghats to look at & the boat rides on the Ghange are fun. Lots of little streets to get lost in & a buzzing town centre full of goodies to buy - if you can navigate your way to it that is-, be warned though that there are plenty of power cuts here lasting for a long period of time so you do not want to be lost wandering the streets on your own at night. Be wary of locals at night too, majority ok but an uneasy air after dark & plenty of hostels have a curfew to ensure safety... Be respectful of the burning ghat where bodies are being burned and don't part with any money for wood, it's usually a scam from someone pretending to be a part of the official ceremony.
A boat ride on the Ghange!Night time best for me as you can light a candle and let it float away on the River... ahhh
Street vendors' samosa & curry - mmm
Shanti as it has possibly the highest roof-top views, dorms on roof, a pool table & 24 hr restaurant - be warned though that food is poor & service slow
Shanti - plenty of Westerner's retreat here, so lots of people to meet & of course the Festival party on the waterfront with locals
Must take a boat ride to see the goings-on along the banks, its really interesting
