Matopas, Zimbabwe

Number 4 of the big 5!

We were up bright and early to go on safari to Matopas, we met our guide Andy- who was class, very very knowledgeable and very funny. Our group for the day was me, John, Mark, Susan, Dave, Dale and Carl. After only about ten minutes we found Rhino tracks so we got out and started to track them. Andy taught us about how they mark their territory and all about their poo... lovely! Finally after about 20 minutes of walking we found our girl, a white Rhino- we got so so close to her but she didn't seem to mind- which was good as she was bloody massive! We did get some awesome shots next to her, but unfortunately we lost the disc that they were kept on. We are going to try and piece together some of the other people's shots so watch this space. We then met the other group and had a picnic up a hill that looked out over the park before moving on to see some Bushmen pictures in some nearby caves. The pictures were from 10 thousand years ago and were pretty clear- it was very impressive! On the drive back to the hostel we got chatting to Norman and Andy about local politics which was a really interesting insight into Zimbabwean life. Oh yeah you feel like your loaded as it was 8 million Zimbabwean dollars to the pound but the bank rate was only 30,000 so you have to use the black market. We invited them back to join us for tea but I think they were a little scared off after I commented that Dirty dancing was compulsory- they didn't know it was a film...Very embarrassing!

Pizza Delivery Zimbabwean Style

That night we were having pizza from a local takeaway- but they had no food (I know its pretty random) so we had to take all of the toppings that we wanted on the pizzas! The other group had arrived earlier than us so Dale, Sam, Jo and Jenny had gone to drop the toppings off. They seemed to take ages to come back and when they finally arrived bearing pizzas it turned out that the cooks had been really slow so they all went behind the counter and started helping- there pictures were hillarious! The pizzas were fab and we saved some for brekky!
