Living in St. Louis

by Caroline VJ
Help
So I'm now in Senegal, living in St. Louis, which is the old capital. I'm here for 4 months, working in a kindergarten and a radio station. Slightly concerned about the number of insects, and living in fear after reading the guide book summary of African diseases (I just can't WAIT to haemmorage through the nose) but I'm sure I'll get over this eventually and hopefully be able to post something positive. Will try to update this as often as I can and please give me all the news from home too. I'm going to miss you all loads but I see you in 8 short months I guess! After Sénégal I'll be travelling with Els to Thailand, Singapore, Bali, Australia, NZ and North America for four months. If you don't see either of us again, we've probably killed eachother. I'm back too for 3 days from May 3rd to May 6th so if anybody is around then, let me know! But for now, my new address is: Corniche Darou St Louis Sénégal Africa Keep in touch and if anybody is thinking about taking a holiday, you know where to go, and it's only 6 hours away - but you might want to bring your own hot water.

My journey

St. Louis, Senegal

Monday, 12 March 2007

Just a quick one with a few things I forgot to mention yesterday:

1) Mum and Dad look away now - hired mopeds. Really fun if a little scary. Sadly though luck was not on my side and my moped broke down. Lucy had to drive me back in to Saint Louis, the most hellish five minute journey of my life (and yes, that does include every five minutes in every driving test Ive ever had, so you can understand quite how bad it was).

2) I HATE Bifals - these men who walk roudn and grab your arms to get you to give them money "in the name of Allah". If this is true and they really are servants of Allah, Allah is certainly not as clean cut as he seems - the Bifals use his money to buy a lot of weed and sit around in markets getting stoned all day - Godly, I think not.

3) I bought a huge trunk with teddy bears on it for school and the teacher gave me her ring to saythank you - its dawned on me how much Im going to miss them all at Daaray Gone Yi, with the exception of the creepy teacher and the five year old bully. I even found the rebellion today (when the teacher went out of the room) cute - what is wrong with me?

4) A little boy wore a bobble hat, coat and scarf to school today despite it being 30 degrees outside.

5) The school inspector is the meanest man alive and gave some of the kids a huge beating today for forgetting their overalls - what is wrong with the African education system?!

No time left but so much to say, will update again soon!

Love to you all as always xxx
