Hello from Koh Samui,
Our blog is getting a little bit behind now and as we have done some pretty cool things, my mind is trying to go back to last week when we were in Koh Samui......so give me a second for my brain to recall it............
Ah there it is. So we arrived to Koh Samui after a looooong day of travelling. After 9/10 days on Phi Phi (pee pee), this last week we have (kind of) constantly been on the go. I'm not complaining but it's nice to be able to do what we want when we want and if we don't fancy doing anything that day? Who care's, it's our holiday :) That is one of the biggest things that makes Kate's and mine travelling easier, we can't be bothered to do anything, together.
So we arrived on Koh Samui after an eventless bus and boat journey. I slept through most of it. We didn't know much about the place but in foresight we saw it as our salvation for relaxation, bring on the sun and bring on the sunbathing (I'm still determined to become browner than my sister, hehe). Turned out, no sunbathing and sunny really only for a day.
The first thing I noticed, though the Island was a beautiful sight, was that it didn't really match our first and ongoing sightings of Phi Phi. You couldn't get islands so different. Where Phi Phi has about as much tourism as it can handle (It's much smaller in comparison to Phi Phi) Koh Samui is the Goliath to Phi Phi's David. Tourism heaven, or hell.
We decided to stay on a less rowdy beach. Bo Phut. From the beach you can see a huge Buddha overlooking the sea. Unfortunately we didn't get to see it up close. Our accommodations were set back from the road, which worried us a little. Uneven paths and small native homes rowed the path. Eventually we stumbled (literally) upon Cactus bungalows and couldn't help but be charmed by it. Our bungalow was small but had the essentials, a fan that moved from head to foot and a big double bed set on a platform. The bathroom was bugless too. Yay.
Considering we paid an excellent price for the bungalow. The equivalent of about 3.50 each (pounds) the restaurant itself was quite expensive. It overlooked the sea and had a really relaxed vibe.
The first two days we ate, played alot of Clag (we have renamed it to Kap Um Clag), watched alot of rain and slept to our hearts content. It was paradise, I didn't care about the rain.
We finally decided to get off our lazy backs on our last full day and see the sights, or just the most famous beach/side of the island, Chaweng Beach. We couldn't believe the contrast compared to the area we were staying. In our minds nothing could beat Cactus Bungalow but we quite liked the tourism around Chaweng (it had a boots ha!) and the ocean itself on that side looked pretty fantastic. We sat there for half an hour deciding whether in our future travels, go for the hotspot or the quieter locations. We've gone for the hotspots because there is a reason why they are.
Kate and I, for the first two days were contemplating renting a moped. I preached that I was a good driver and could handle Kate on the back. So off we rent to the first bike rent shop we could find and enquired. The man said 'No insurance and you have to get the petrol' we hummed and the over-enthusiastic man said 'It is very hard to ride' - needless to say he didn't convince us and we took the safer option.
On our way back from Chaweng we shared a tuk-tuk with a welsh lady and her swiss husband. Could not of met a nicer couple but wow they could talk. They spoke about the same thing over eachother, we didn't know who to look at but they were completely charming. Our brains had turned to mush after this conversation and we got off the tuk-tuk about 30 mins walk from where we should have stopped.
I bought some hair stuff from boots hehe. Shame on me? So did Kate!
So overall we enjoyed Koh Samui, whether we made the most of it I don't know but we enjoyed the time we spent.
Bring on Koh Phangan!
